[N01I02529] Joined the Confederate Army with his brother Robert, training at the Rifle Ground in Richmond, VA. They served in the same unit, Amelia Riflemen and served together until Thomas' death. (Company C, 23rd Regiment Virginia Volunteers, Northeastern Army, General Garnett's Command.) They left Richmond on June 10th by train to Staunton, where where they would march to Philippi. Thomas wrote on June 18th from Randolph County reporting they were on their way to Philippi marching 15-20 miles a day. Robert wrote that Thomas was sick even before they left Richmond. By the time they reached McDowell Highland County, Thomas was much worse and Robert sick. Robert wrote to Pleasant to see if he could come. On August 13th Pleasant wrote to his wife, Virginia, that he had reached McDowell on August 11th and was told that Thomas had died 4 days before. Robert was very sick but improving. Pleasant said that he was having a box made to bring Thomas' body back home but had to find time to pack the body since the weather was so hot. The Colonel thought that it would be better to wait until cold weather, but Pleasant was making plans to bring him when he came on August 17th. Pleasant had to go in to Staunton to pick up the box. He had a hard time finding a conveyance to carry the corpse to Staunton where they would take a train back to Richmond. On August 24th Charles Pleasant received a letter from Pleasant saying that he still had not been able to get Thomas to Staunton and was afraid that he would have to leave the body with a friend, Mr. Reed, until other arrangements could be made. Robert was still improving and hoped to be able to come home with Pleasant. He told Charles to be sure to look after the tobacco and corn and to see that the blacksmith shop had plenty of iron. ?References to 44th Virginia?

[N01I02973] January, 1999: I originally had Elizabeth also married to Jonathan Easton (<1679 - 1724) with Ruth Easton (ca 1716 - ) as their child, but I think that this was due to some confusion over the two Easton names. Otherwise, nothing makes sense - there are too many births very late in life, too many cross-generational marriages, and Jonathan Easton would have married two Elizabeth Cadwells - an aunt and her niece. Therefore, I have moved Ruth underneath the other Elizabeth Cadwell (her niece) and Jonathan Easton and removed this marriage from the database.[Cadwell (Alice Gedge).FTW] ! [N01I03176] Called "Aunt Molly". Willed the old Cadwell place to her seven nieces and nephews since she had no children of her own. The house was built in 1765 and had the date carved on a beam over the door. The estate was known as Piedmont and was part of over 900 acres in Amelia County, VA. Stipulated in her will that the farm had to stay in the family. L. Cadwell Wilkinson bought out the others' shares. The last major battle of the Civil War was fought at Gaylor's Creek, which included Piedmont.

[N01I03281] Original family history has Thomas born in England, but evidence from other researchers points to his birth in CT. Thomas was a ferry keeper and resided near Front and State Streets (according to Perry Streeter). Hartford Co. probate records state that Thomas was a constable, farmer, and chiney viewer. Also states Congregational. [Clay Cadwell] There is a Thomas Cadwell, died 1694 in Hartford, CT listed in Everton's Root Celler #26759 (ELLEN J M WHEELER, 2324 NORTHWEST 45 ST OKLAHOMA CTY OK 73112) (Ginny Arveson) Birth date is 12 January 1628/9. Birthplace is Hartford, CT or Scotland. Some question about when Cadwell family came to America. According to documents from Rbt C. Eller "One source states that Edward I and his brother, Matthew, (sons of Thomas) came about 1680 from Holland, to which they had fled from Scotland to escape religious persectution by the Church of England. However, court records of Hartford, CT show that, on Oct. 13, 1654, (before Edward was even born) two thieves were convicted of stealing a pair of pistols from ...Thomas. Later records show that Thomas Cadwell was sworn in as a constable for Hartford Township on March 5, 1663." [N01I03307] (GH) Geneva Hamilton (rgham@thegrid.net): I understand both Walterr and Thomas Cadwell came to America 1619, land in Maine, Walter listed as a merchant. John was next heard about in Mass in 1630 when he, too, was first noted as a merchant. By 1632 he was living in CT. Walter and John left Scotland and shipped to America out of Liverpool. I have not learned the details of their Maine residence but so far, have assumed Walter died there and John then migrated to the New England colonies in Mass where he soon decided to leave for CT. -Some information from Broderbund WFT Vol. 2, Ed. 1, Tree 4785. -Information from Merlin Hansen (Merlinh@execu.net): Spellingg variations include Cadell, Caddell, Cadel, Campbell, and others. First found in Banffshire where they were recorded as a family of great antiquity seated at Ardwale and Asloune in that shire. Some of the first settlers of that name were: John Cadell who settled in the Barbados in 1654; another Joh arrived in New York in 1774. Infers that the Cadwell name is a variant of Campbell, probably derived from cam-beul, one of the oldest in the Highland. The founder of the Argyll line was Cailean Mor (d. 1294), whose descendant, Colin Campbell (d. 1493), 1st earl of Argyll, married Isabel Stewart of Lome.
