OCTOBER 1912

Tue. Oct. 1st. Cloudy some all day but bright and cool from NE. Willie and Ben and Lucy and some hands picked peas today and Ed hauled all of them late in eve with Wiley's team. Marion and I picked soy beans all morn and I threshed pecans in eve and children picked up 1 1/4 pecks, mostly large ones, and I sunned pepper and pindars and bread corn today.

Wed. 2nd. Bright but some clouds all day and cool from E. Willie and Ben and Lucy and some hands picked peas all day and hauled them with the mules at dusk. Marion and I picked soy beans in morn and I picked up some pecans and packed and cut up some wood in eve.

Thu. 3rd. Bright and pleasant and dry from NE. Willie and Ben and Lucy and some hands picked peas all day and hauled them at dusk. Marion and I picked soy beans till 10 in morn and I cut some with a cane knife and Willie threshed beans in a basket till 11 3/4 and we got about 1 bu of threshed ones and quit. I got wood and water and fed in eve.

Fri. 4th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Ben and Joe Neal and family picked peas today and hauled them at dusk. I got wood for Lucy to wash early in morn. I rode Sandy and Marion Josie to Ogden's mill and returned at 10 3/4 with 7 pecks of meal. I threshed a pecan tree in eve and children and I gathered 1 1/4 pecks of big pecans and Carmel and I drove up Kate's heifer (Rabbit) with a bull calf after sunset.

Sat. 5th. Bright and warm and dry. Willie and Ben and Joe Neal and family picked peas in morn and hauled them at 12 with our mules to Lewis' wagon. Wiley drove his team to our wagon and carried 6 hogs to town in morn and sold to Mount. I cut up wood early in morn and grabbled some yams and got some persimmons in morn. Willie drove Sandy to town in eve.

Sun. 6th. Bright and warm and dry. Nellie and Carmel walked to Dick Chambers in morn and Miss Fannie Holland was buried there in eve. Buddy and wife and her 2 little children here most of day. Lewis and Cousin Mary here a little while in morn.

Mon. 7th. Bright and dry and pleasant from NW. Ben plowed up potatoes on hilltop of Cherry cut all morn and Willie and Lucy and I picked them up and they hauled all in 2 loads with Lewis' wagon and hauled in peas picked by Joe Neal's family in eve. I cleaned out meat and potatoee houses in eve and gathered 1/2 peck of big pecans.

Tue. 8th. Bright and dry and pleasant from NW. We dug potatoes today as on yesterday. I gathered 1 peck of big pecans in eve and got wood and water and fed too. Miss Lula Coon began her school here on yesterday.

Wed. 9th. Bright and warm and dry. We dug potatoes today as on yesterday and I threshed a tree and gathered 1 peck of big ones in eve.

Thu. 10th. Bright and warm in morn and dry but cloudy late in eve from S and appearance of rain. We dug potatoes in Cherry cut all morn and finished all of them by 11 3/4 in morn and Willie and Ben and Lucy hauled them in eve. I threshed a tree of big pecans toward road in eve and Minnie and I gathered nearly 1/2 bu of them.

Fri. 11th. Bright and warm and dry but cloudy late in eve and thundered in SW but no rain here. Willie and I dug the late Irish potatoes in Pine hollow in morn and Ben and I gathered 2 pecks of big pecans in eve. I got wood for Lucy to wash here early in morn.

Sat. 12th. Bright and warm all morn and clouded up at 3 in eve and we had a good rain at 3 1/4 to 4 in eve from SE. Willie and Nellie and Carmel and Bernice drove Nancy and Julia (mule) to Wiley's Surry to Mrs. C.W. Henderson's burying in morn and attended the Woodville fair and returned late in eve after the rain. I threshed and gathered 1/2 bu of big pecans today.

Sun. 13th. Bright in morn and quite cool from N and cloudy all eve and cool and rained a little late in eve. Dan here till 3 in eve. Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve. I walked to Wiley's and back early in eve and Nellie walked there too at 3 in eve.

Mon. 14th. Cloudy all day and no sun and quite cool from NE and rained a little slowly in eve and at night. Willie and Lucy and I packed up our pumpkins from hollow E of here and put them under our house by 9 1/2 in morn and we threshed and gathered pecans (big ones) balance of day and got 5 pecks.

Tue. 15th. Cloudy and no rain and quite cool from NE all day and sprinkled rain a little in morn and in eve too. Willie and Lucy and I threshed and gathered pecans all day and got 5 1/2 pecks, mostly big ones.

Wed. 16th. Cloudy some all day but bright and sun shined after 10 in morn and pleasant from S of E. Willie and Lucy and I gathered pecans all day and got 6 pecks, mostly small ones.

Thu. 17th. Cloudy and a damp breeze from SE all day and rained a little in night. Willie and I got wood for Lucy to wash here early in morn and we gathered pecans balance of morn and cleaned and assorted pecans most of eve to sell.

Fri. 18th. It began to rain in little sprinkles at 7 in morn from SE and rained a good soaking rain at 8 to 10 and bright from NW and pleasant in eve. Willie took the mules to Wiley's early in morn and brought the Surry here at 11 and carried 2 1/2 bbls of pecans on Surry to town in eve and sold to Treppendahl for $47.75 and returned at dark. I picked up pecans in morn and eve too.

Sat. 19th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N and no rain in sight. Willie and children and I gathered one bu of small pecans at roadside in morn and I picked up 1/2 peck of big ones in eve. Willie and children went to the creek in eve to fish.

Sun. 20th. Bright, nearly clear, and cool from N. Wiley went to his Pa's in morn and Bernice and Buddy too and Rena and John and little Nellie here most of day and Dan too. Willie and Carmel and Marion walked to SS in eve.

Mon. 21st. Foggy and wet early in morn and bright and warm in eve. Willie and I sawed down a red oak in NE corner of orchard early in morn and sawed off 3 cuts and split them into railings to make a hog pen by 3 in eve.

Tue. 22nd. Warm and foggy early in morn and bright till 3 in eve and cloudy and sprinkled rain from NW at 3 to 4 and turned cool from W of N and wind blew quite cool all night. Willie and I hauled railings (split on yesterday) early in morn and Willie hauled some posts too to S side of garden and 2 loads of wood too and Willie put up a hog pen on S side of garden in eve. I shucked and shelled some bread corn at 10 to 12 and till 3 1/2 in eve.

Wed. 23rd. Bright and very cool and dry from N. Willie cut cane in patch E of here in morn and Lucy ricked it for seed and I helped them part of the morn and we finished all by 11 3/4. Nellie and Carmel and Charles drove Nancy to our buggy to town in morn and returned late in eve. Miss Lula Coon went home in morn - her brother Charlie died on yesterday. Willie rode Sandy to town in eve.

Thu. 24th. Bright, but some clouds all day, and nearly cold enough for frost in morn but pleasant after 10 in morn. Willie covered 2 ricks of seed cane in patch E of here with dirt in morn and we put our dry cattle in field in morn. I got wood for Lucy to wash here in morn early and packed and cut up good deal of wood and picked up nearly 1/2 peck of pecans in eve.

Fri. 25th. Cloudy and nearly cold enough for frost early in morn and bright and dry and pleasant from N in eve. Willie worked on and finished hog pen back of garden in morn. Marion rode Josie and I Sandy to Ogden's early in morn and carried 7 1/2 pecks of corn and left it at the store (the mill was not running). We put some of hogs out of field into calf pasture (to sell) in eve. Wiley ground cane and cooked molasses today.

Sat. 26th. Bright and very cool early in morn and dry and pleasant from N after 10 in morn. Willie rode Sandy to town at 10 in morn. He helped Wiley to cut open his cow (Star) which died early in morn from overeating and Willie returned at 3 1/2 in eve. I rode Josie to Ogden's early in morn and returned at 9 3/4 with 7 pecks of meal and I threshed 2 pecan trees and gathered 1 1/2 pecks of big pecans by 3 in eve. Wiley finished cooking his molasses late in eve.

Sun. 27th. Clear and very cool early in morn but dry and pleasant after 9 in morn. Willie and Carmel and Marion drove Sandy to Meth Church in town in morn and they went to SS in eve. Nellie and Charles and I walked to Wiley's and back in eve. Nellie and Lila and Bernice and Earl went in Wiley's Surry to Meth Church in town at night. Cap D and Cal Hamilton ate supper here at night.

Mon. 28th. Clear and very cool early in morn but dry and pleasant after 9 in morn. Willie rode Sandy to Stina field and brought home Josie and her 2 colts and Ella early in morn and brought the wagon from Wiley's and patched it up in eve. I hoed turnips in garden part of morn and eve too.

Tue. 29th. Bright and pleasant from SE. Willie drove our mules to our wagon and Ed drove Wiley's team to one of Lanehart's wagons and carried 17 hogs and sold to Lewis and Mount and returned at 1 1/2 in eve. I hoed turnips in garden in morn and helped Willie to water horses and the 16 hogs left in pen in eve.

Wed. 30th. Bright and pleasant from SE and dry. Willie and Ed carried the 16 hogs (left in pen) to town as on yesterday and sold to Lewis and Mount and returned at 1 1/2 in eve. I hoed in garden in morn and Willie and I took horses from field in eve and watered them and put them back in field in eve. Cousin Steve W came here from Woodland in eve and stayed all night.

Thu. 31st. Bright and warm but some clouds all day and a damp wind from S and thundered in SW and W most of eve and blew up from NW at 8 in night and sprinkled rain a little and turned cool. Willie drove Sandy to buggy to town early in morn and carried Cousin Steve W and returned at 1 1/2. I got wood and water for Lucy to wash here early in morn and hoed in garden till 11 3/4 and finished. Willie and I got all of our hogs out of field in eve and put them in calf pasture.
