JUNE 1914
Mon. Jun. 1st. Bright, nearly clear, and dry and very warm from N and a thunder cloud in sight in E most of eve. Willie and Dud finished barring off corn in Sims' bottom at 10 1/2 in morn and molded corn in back of field balance of day. I hoed cucumbers and some tomatoes in Sims' bottom in morn and I cut some stakes back of garden to stake tomatoes in eve.
Tue. 2nd. Bright, nearly clear, and very warm from NE all morn and till 4 in eve and rained around NE and E of here in thunder showers at 4 to 6 - but none here. Willie and Dud molded corn (2nd planting) today. I cut and packed some stakes and set them by some tomatoes in garden in morn and tied them up in eve. Cap D brought Nellie home at 9 in morn.
Wed. 3rd. Bright, nearly clear, and very warm and dry till late in eve and a thunder cloud passed around just W of here from S and we got a good little shower at 5 3/4 to 6 1/4. Willie molded corn today and Dud and Sophia hoed corn. I hoed some tomatoes in garden and some in Sims' bottom and the squashes there too in morn and I got wood and water and fed and helped Minnie to milk in eve.
Thu. 4th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and rained around in thunder showers at 3 1/4 to 4 1/2 but only sprinkled here. Willie plowed corn and Dud and Sophia hoed corn today and Leah hoed too in eve - she washed here in morn. I hoed more than 1/2 of watermelon patch in morn and picked some dry peas in garden in eve.
Fri. 5th. Bright and warm most of day and rained around in thunder showers some in eve but none here. Willie plowed corn and Dud and Sophia hoed corn today. I hoed watermelon patch in morn and finished last of it.
Sat. 6th. Bright and warm and no rain here but little showers passed around some in eve. Willie and Marion drove the mules to wagon to town in morn and returned at 12 1/4 with some meal and flour. Dud hoed corn in morn. I hoed okra and pole beans in pumpkin hollow in morn and stopped pig holes in Lanehart's wire fence E of here in eve and picked some dry peas in garden too. Willie rode Maud Est and Marion rode Sandy in eve to hunt cattle.
Sun. 7th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain in sight. Charles had fever last night and today. Willie and Marion and Carmel walked to SS in eve. Rena and John here awhile in eve.
Mon. 8th. Bright and very warm and dry all day and a thunder cloud in sight in eve late. Willie plowed corn today and Dud and Sophia and Leah hoed corn today. I hoed butter beans in Pine hollow in morn.
Tue. 9th. Bright and very warm till 3 1/2 in eve and rained around in thunder showers late in eve and we had a good rain here at 8 to 9 at night and slowly till later and much needed too. Willie plowed corn today and Dud and Sophia and Leah hoed corn and finished last of it late in eve. I picked some dry peas in garden and pulled down all the vines in morn and dug half of Irish potatoes in garden too. Clarence L here today and I went to creek with him and Marion in eve and they went in creek.
Wed. 10th. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and rained around in thunder showers at 3 to 5 in eve and we had a good hard soaking rain here at 4 to 5 from SE with some wind and thunder. Willie and Dud plowed corn till the rain in eve and got soaking wet. I planted some pole beans in garden where the peas grew and some eggplant seed too in morn and finished digging the Irish potaotes there too.
Thu. 11th. Bright and very warm most of day and thundered in eve in E and a cloud in sight but no rain here. Willie rode Sandy to Joe Miller's in morn and brought home a dark young bull at dark. Dud broke up oat ground in old orchard with the mules. I set out and watered some pepper in field and got wood and water and fed in eve.
Fri. 12th. Bright and very warm till 3 in eve and cloudy balance of eve and rained around E of here most of eve and a little slow one here late in eve. Willie broke ground in oat patch today and finished there at 6 in eve. Dud hoed pindars today. I planted some bell pepper in garden early in morn and hoed there till 10 1/2.
Sat. 13th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight today. Dud hoed pindars in morn and finished them at 10 and ran cultivator around cane in patch E of here by 12. Willie plowed corn till 10 in morn and finished 2nd planting of corn and drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed in garden in morn and shelled some dry garden peas in eve.
Sun. 14th. Bright and warm and no rain here but thundered far off in eve. Nellie and Carmel and Charles drove Nancy to our buggy to Dixie's in morn and returned late in eve. Willie rode Sandy to Buddy's in morn and returned at sunset. Lewis and his 3 youngest children here awhile in morn. Marion went to SS in eve. I walked to Wiley's and back in eve.
Mon. 15th. Bright and warm and no rain but a rain cloud in sight in N at night and lightning there. Willie molded corn and Dud ran cultivator on corn middles in young corn today. I hoed in garden most of morn.
Tue. 16th. Bright and warm all morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 3 1/4 in eve and we had a good hard shower till 4 and needed too. Willie molded late corn and Dud ran cultivator ahead of him today. I hoed squashes in field and pepper in morn.
Wed. 17th. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and cloudy and sultry all eve and rained around in thunder showers some late in eve but only dropped a little here. Dud ran cultivator on middles in late corn and Willie molded behind him today. I hoed all of tomatoes and cucumbers in Sims' bottom in morn and went to creek with Marion and Buddy in eve for them to play in water.
Thu. 18th. Cloudy early in morn and a thunder cloud came up from NW at 7 in morn and rained a long good rain till 12 and bright in eve. Willie and Dud plowed corn till the rain in morn and they and Marion set out slips in oat patch N of here most of eve. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn but she didn't come and I watered some of slips in oat patch in eve.
Fri. 19th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Marion and Dud dug and packed in the Irish potatoes from patch in bean hollow E of here in morn and put them in old potatoe house and Willie and Dud hoed the stubble cane in patch E of here in eve. I packed some rain water and some from well (about 2 bbls) and watered the slips set out on yesterday eve in morn by 12.
Sat. 20th. Bright and very warm and no rain in sight. Willie and Dud plowed corn in morn and Willie drove Sandy to town in eve. I hoed about 1/2 of watermelon patch in Sims' bottom in morn and I put one more wire around the pear tree near garden (at bottom) to keep out the calves in eve and tied up some tomatoes (3rd time) in garden.
Sun. 21st. Bright and warm and no rain here but thundered around some late in eve. All but me went to SS in eve and Bro Ellis preached there.
Mon. 22nd. Bright and very warm till 2 1/2 in eve and cloudy and thunder showers passed around in eve but only dropped a little here. Willie and Dud plowed corn today. I hoed in watermelon patch in morn till 10 and I picked some dry bush beans in garden in eve.
Tue. 23rd. Bright and very warm all day and no rain near. Willie and Dud plowed corn till 4 in eve and finished last of it and they plowed pindars late in eve. I hoed watermelon patch till 10 in morn and finished last of it and I got wood and water and fed in eve. Carmel and Marion and Charles at Wiley's most of day. It is little Wiley's birthday.
Wed. 24th. Bright and very warm all day and no rain near and very sultry all night. Willie hoed sugar cane today. Dud plowed pindars by 4 in eve and plowed cane in patch E of here late in eve. I hoed pepper and late tomatoes and squashes in Sims' bottom in morn and went to creek with Buddy and Marion in eve and came by Wiley's to see the new cistern which Buck Arque is digging.
Thu. 25th. Bright and very warm and rained around some in eve and we had a hard sprinkle at 3. Dud plowed cane in patch E of here in morn and finished it and he ran harrow on oat ground in old orchard smoothing ground to set out slips on it, in eve. Willie cut briars out of corn in patch E of here today. I hoed okra and pole beans in pumpkin hollow in morn.
Fri. 26th. Bright and warm till 3 in eve and a big thunder cloud passed around E from SE at 3 to 4 1/2 in eve but only sprinkled here. Willie hoed and picked grass out of planted yams on H ridge today. Dud hoed burrs in corn today. Buck Arque finished Wiley's cistern in eve. I hoed butter beans in pumpkin hollow in morn.
Sat. 27th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain near. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn and rode him to hunt some pigs in eve. Dud and I set up 2 old mulberry posts at our well for drawing water in morn.
Sun. 28th. Bright and very warm and dry and no rain near. I walked to Wiley's and back in eve. All except Nellie and Charles and Carl and me went to SS in eve.
Mon. 29th. Bright and warm and dry and no rain near. Willie and Dud pumped our well early in morn and Willie helped Minnie and Bernice to put up canvas in Nellie's room balance of day and Dud hoed burrs in corn. I shucked some bread corn in morn.
Tue. 30th. Bright and dry and very warm and no rain in sight. Dud hoed burrs in corn today. Willie drove Sandy to town in morn to get some more canvas for Nellie's room and returned at 9 3/4 and he put up canvas balance of day. Minnie and Bernice helped Willie. I hoed butter beans and tomatoes in garden in morn and I took Marion and Buddy and Charles to the creek in eve.
