JULY 1916
Sat. July 1st. Bright and warm till 1 1/2 in eve and thundered and rained around most of eve and rained here slowly at 5 to 7 in eve. Dud hoed in potatoes in morn. Willie and Marion drove Sandy and Julia to town in eve and returned at dusk. I picked some dry beans in morn. Wiley and Bernice brought Annabel James from town at 12 1/2 today.
Sun. 2nd. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and thundered and rained around at 4 to 6 but only dropped a little here. Ogden's children here in eve and they and Minnie and Carmel and Marion went to SS.
Mon. 3rd. Bright and warm till 2 in eve and a cloud passed around NE of here from E and we had a little shower here at 3 and again slowly at dark. Willie and Dud plowed cotton today. I picked some dry beans in new garden in morn and shelled some in eve.
Tue. 4th. Bright and warm in morn and clouded up at 2 in eve and we had a good soaking rain (and much needed) at 2 to 4 from E. Willie and Dud didn't work today. Willie rode Maud Est to hunt cattle on creek in morn. Wiley and family and Miss Eva Ferguson dined here and left at 4 in eve. I picked some dry beans in new garden in morn.
Wed. 5th. Cloudy and cool from NE and sprinkled rain (a hard little shower) at 4 in eve. Willie and Marion and I set out slips all morn and Willie and Marion in eve too till the rain. Dud didn't come to work today. We had ice cream in eve and Wiley and family and Jack D and Nora and Bessie Dickson and Ethel McGehee and Clarence all here.
Thu. 6th. Cloudy and cool and dropped and sprinkled rain most of day from N. Willie and Marion and Dud set out slips all day and finished late in eve. I cut vines for them all morn.
Fri. 7th. Bright but some clouds all day and dropped rain at 4 in eve and a cool wind from NW all day. Willie rode Sandy on creek to put dry cattle in pasture. Dud rescraped planted potatoes in field all day and Willie too in eve. I hoed pepper in tomatoe patch and set out gaps in it early in morn and picked some dry beans in new garden by 10.
Sat. 8th. Bright in morn and cloudy in eve and cool from NW. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped cattle early in morn and Dud rescraped potatoes in field till 12. Marion and Carmel and Annabel drove Julia (mule) and Nellie and little Nellie drove Nancy to picture show in eve. I hoed tomatoes in field in morn.
Sun. 9th. Bright, nearly clear, till 3 1/2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from N and we had a little shower at 4. Willie and Minnie drove Sandy to Mr. D Chambers and returned late in eve.
Mon. 10th. Bright and warm till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from N then and we had a good rain and needed too. Willie and Dud plowed cotton till 3 in eve and cane in patch N of here and finished at 4 just as rain came up. I hoed late beans in new garden in morn and shelled some dry beans in eve.
Tue. 11th. Bright and warm in morn and cloudy and thundered and rained around some in eve but none here. I hoed over most of old garden in morn and shelled some dry beans in eve. Willie and Dud ran cultivators in slips in field today and plowed some of planted potatoes there too.
Wed. 12th. Bright and warm and a breeze from W and no rain in sight today. Willie and Dud and Marion planted some Irish potatoes in patch N of here in morn. I got wood for Leah to wash and Charles and Carl and I brought some watermelons and cantelopes from field and Marion helped us too. I hunted hens' nests and found 2 in eve.
Thu. 13th. Bright and warm and no rain in sight. Willie ran harrow in cotton with Ella today and Dud scraped slips. Marion and Carmel and Annabel drove Julia (mule) to Bill Ferguson's today. I brought some cantelopes from field early in morn and carried 2 to Wiley's.
Fri. 14th. Bright and warm and no rain but thundered far off in eve. Willie and Dud ran harrows in cotton today. I hoed 2 rows of planted potatoes in field (last in grass) in morn and picked some dry beans in new garden in eve.
Sat. 15th. Bright and very warm till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from SE and we had a good soaking rain with a great deal of thunder at 6 to 8 at night. Dud finished harrowing cotton in morn and Willie rode Daisie to see cattle and he drove her to buggy to town in eve and carried Annabel James. I hoed 2 rows of planted potatoes in field in morn. Elma and Emma Flinn came late in eve just before rain started.
Sun. 16th. Bright, but cloudy some all day and rained a little shower here at 3 in eve. Willie and Minnie and Carmel and Marion and Elma and Emma went to SS in eve.
Mon. 17th. Bright in morn and we had a big rain here at 12 in morn and bright in eve and warm. Willie rode Daisie to hunt cattle in morn and got soaking wet and hunted cattle again in eve. Dud hoed slips in morn and cut briars in calf pasture in eve. Marion and I brought 2 Tom Watson watermelons fron field in morn.
Tue. 18th. Bright but cloudy some in morn and in eve too and rained around in thundershowers some and we had a little shower here at 5 in eve. Willie James here last night and we gathered some figs for him and he left at 9 1/2. Willie rode Daisie to Bro Tom's late in eve and returned at dark. Dud cut briars in calf pasture today. I shelled some dry beans in eve.
Wed. 19th. Bright in morn and cloudy in eve and we had a hard shower at 3 to 4 and dropped rain balance of eve. Dud cut briars in calf pasture in morn. Willie and Marion and I brought 3 watermelons from field early in morn and I got some tomatoes and okra from new garden by 10 1/2. Elma and Emma came here from Dixie's early in morn and went to Wiley's late in eve.
Thu. 20th. Cloudy and no sun and began to rain from W at 7 1/2 in morn and lasted till 1 and quit - a big fall of water in all - but fell slowly and didn't wash much. Dud cut briars in calf pasture in eve. Willie and Marion cut weeds on W side of here in eve. Elma and Emma came from Wiley's in eve and went on home.
Fri. 21st. Cloudy some all day and we had a shower at 1 1/2 in eve and rained here slowly at 6 1/2 to 8 at night. Dud cut briars in calf pasture today. -------- to drive cattle------- and again in eve ----. ------ in morn out W of here.
Sat. 22nd. Bright at 9 ----- and all eve and we had a hard shower----. Willie and Marion and Dud dipped cattle ----- Daisie to town and returned just before ----- and bushes near cane W ---- some dry beans in eve.
Sun. 23rd. Bright and warm from ---- thundered and rained ----- but dropped a little ---- Marion and Carmel ----- and Nellie and 2 little ones ----.
Mon. 24th. Bright ---- and cloudy and thundered ---- of eve but no rain here. Dud scraped slips today and ----- cut briars near cow pen in morn and set 3 hens in coop in eve.
Tue. 25th. Bright in morn but we had a shower at 11 in morn and another at 6 in eve. Dud and Henry ran cultivators and plow in slips today and got nearly wet late in eve. I hoed over most of old garden in morn. Martin came for figs at 10 1/2 in morn and I helped him to gather them.
Wed. 26th. Bright and warm most of day and no rain here but rained around some in eve. Dud and Henry plowed slips and finished them late in eve. I got wood for Leah to wash early in morn and hoed butter beans in new garden till 10 in morn.
Thu. 27th. Bright and very warm till 4 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from E then and we had a big rain with good deal of thunder and some wind till 4 1/2 and another cloud came up at 6 and we had another shower. Dud and Henry hoed in cotton till the rain in eve. I hoed in new garden till 10 1/2 in morn.
Fri. 28th. Bright and warm till 3 1/2 in eve and a thunder cloud came up from E then and we had a hard shower till 4 1/2. Willie and Dud hoed in cotton till the rain in eve. I dug up briars near cow pen in morn.
Sat. 29th. Bright and warm till late in eve and a cloud came up from E and we had a shower. Willie and Minnie and Carl drove Julia (mule) and Daisie to Mrs. James' in morn. I dug up briars near cow pen till 10 in morn.
Sun. 30th. Bright and warm till 5 in eve and a cloud blew up from SE then but only dropped rain a little here. Marion and Charles and I rode Sandy in field early in morn and brought home 3 big Watson watermelons. Bernice and 2 of Dr. Brandon's daughters here at 10 to 11 1/2 in morn. Willie and Minnie and Carl returned from Mrs. James' at dusk.
Mon. 31st. Bright and warm most of day but a rain passed around N of here from E late in eve but only dropped a little here. Dud and Henry hoed in cotton till late in eve and helped Willie and Marion to pack some watermelons to road (to sell). I dug up briars out N of patch N of here in morn and shucked some bread corn too.
